DARN LAB MISSION STATEMENT

WE…

… SEEK TO IMPROVE THE LIVES of people with cognitive and language difficulties.

… ADVANCE INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE SCIENCE to push the boundaries of current knowledge on aphasia recovery and neuroplasticity. We maintain academic integrity and promote the best principles of scientific research.

… EXPAND INSIGHTS on 1) how the brain performs cognitive and language functions, 2) how the brain changes in the face of a stroke or other injury or dysfunction, and 3) how to improve recovery.

… RESPECT OURSELVES, EACH OTHER AND OUR WORK, and care for the whole person. We welcome patients and caregivers to our lab and highlight their role as partners in effective science. We are each responsible for fostering a supportive, encouraging lab culture, encouraging open communication and failure as an integral part of curiosity and innovation.

… EMBRACE DIVERSITY and encourage out-of-the-box thinking and techniques. We welcome diverse viewpoints from people with varied professional and life backgrounds and create an inclusive community for all lab members.

… MENTOR the next generation of scientists and clinicians. Our lab is a learning community and science only works when each of us commits to our own development and regular collaboration.

… TRANSLATE OUR FINDINGS into practical interventions and therapies and share cutting-edge science with the public in accessible ways. We prioritize real-world improvements in patient care and recovery outcomes for individuals with stroke aphasia.
